Live cockroach on wall and black mold in ice machine: Latest Stanislaus County inspections

Modesto Bee - 3/22/2024

Mar. 22—A live cockroach was observed by Stanislaus County health inspectors at a fast-food restaurant in Turlock, and mold was found in ice machines at a Modesto liquor store and a local restaurant during inspections conducted in early March.

The majority of the 2,400 permitted food service establishments in Stanislaus County receive two unannounced routine food safety inspections per year, according to the Department of Environmental Resources. The website says inspection reports are scanned weekly.

Food trucks that operate under a Stanislaus County Health Department permit are also inspected by the county, though those are scheduled and done at the department's office.

Of the 50 restaurant inspection reports sent to The Modesto Bee on Wednesday, five were not updated on the site as of Wednesday afternoon.

If an inspection listed below needs clarification, business owners can email Modesto Bee reporter Dominique Williams at dwilliams@modbee.com.

Stanislaus County food facilities with major violations

Violations were found during routine inspections of the following Stanislaus County food facilities during the week of March 4-10. Only the dates of violations are listed.

The details of the reports do not indicate whether a restaurant passed or failed inspection. Corrective actions may have been made by the business by the time of publication.

The reports are linked. For updates on individual restaurants, search the DER website.

Stop N Save Liquors, 904 E. Hatch Road in Modesto, had three violations on March 4 — one of them major. Inspectors observed Bar S-brand jumbo franks, hot links and bologna at 43 degrees; cold foods must be kept at 41 degrees or lower. The fridge door was not closing all the way and there was black mold growth inside the ice machine.

7 Star Liquor, 952 Lander Ave. in Turlock, had four violations on March 4. The Pepsi-brand soda dispenser nozzles were observed encrusted with debris and the dispenser's ice chute had black buildup. The bathroom lacked paper towels, but an employee restocked it during the inspection. There were no sanitizer testing strips in the facility.

In the list of inspection reports sent to The Bee by the county, a reinspection of this facility was noted on March 8. It is unknown if any violations were noted as corrected during this reinspection, because the report has not been updated on the website as of Wednesday afternoon.

Mountain Mike's Pizza, 3801 Yosemite Blvd., Suite A, in Modesto, had eight violations on March 4. The walk-in refrigerator floor had grime and flour accumulation, and the wall had food stain and grime buildup. The floor below the syrup-box rack had dirt and grime accumulation and the exterior surface of trash containers had grime buildup. Inspectors observed dust accumulation on the ceiling vents. The prep-area hand sink, soap dispenser and paper towel dispenser were not in good working order. A manager food safety certification and food handler cards for all employees were lacking.

All eight violations were noted as corrected during a reinspection March 11.

Dynasty Garden, 3500 Coffee Road, Suite 1, in Modesto, had three violations on March 4. Inspectors observed minor moldlike growth on the inside surface of the ice machine. The employee bathroom was observed to have several items including three electronic bikes, a ladder, a garbage bag and a mop and bucket stored inside that impeded access to the toilet and the sink. Interior surfaces of refrigerators were coated with grease, grime and food debris.

Dollar General, 5521 Seventh St. in Keyes, had seven violations on March 6 — one of them major. Inspectors observed several food contact surfaces soiled with dust and debris and several food items stored on the floor. The paper towel dispenser in a bathroom was empty and the soap dispenser in the same bathroom was in disrepair. The back food storage area was in disarray and had rubbish on the floors, and the refrigerator in this area had encrusted food debris on the bottom shelf. The permit to operate the store was lacking.

All seven violations were noted as corrected during a reinspection March 12.

Kentucky Fried Chicken/A&W, 2705 W. Monte Vista Ave. in Turlock, had four violations on March 8. Inspectors observed a small, live cockroach on the wall adjacent to the hand wash sink at the kitchen entryway. Inspectors were provided with pest control logs, which included the most recent visit on Feb. 25. The back door was not closing properly, and inspectors noted corrective action should be taken to control the entrance of rodents, flies, cockroaches and other vermin.

There was a leaking pipe under the three-compartment sink. The walk-in fridge had several storage racks that were soiled and had food debris accumulation.
